From Kamchatka, La Perouse proceeded to the South Pacific and finally to Port Jackson and Botany Bay, where he met his untimely death. The map displays the most up to date cartography, especially along the NW Coast of America, NE Coast of Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. La Perouse's voyage is perhaps second only to the Voyages of James Cook in their impact on cartographic knowledge and discoveries in the Pacific Ocean in the second half of the 18th Century." AN ANTIQUE MAP, "MAP OF ABILENE," GALVESTON, 1881-1883,...AN ANTIQUE MAP, "Map of Abilene," GALVESTON, 1881-1883, lithograph on paper, drawn by A.H. Kirby, compiled by J. A. Thomas, printed by Clark & Courts, Galveston, Texas, and published for Carter & Carter: Land, Loans & Stock. 23 1/2" x 25 1/4" Note: "...When the Texas & Pacific Railway began to push westward in 1880, several ranchers and businessmen, including Claiborne W. Merchant, John Merchant, John N. Simpson, John T. Berry, and S. L. Chalk, met with H. C. Whithers, the Texas & Pacific track and townsite locator, and arranged to have the railroad bypass Buffalo Gap, the current County Seat. They agreed that the route would traverse lands which the group owned in the northern part of the county, and that a new town would be established between Cedar and Big Elm creeks east of Catclaw Creek. C. W. Merchant apparently suggested the name Abilene, after the Kansas cattle town....The Texas and Pacific arrived at the site in January 1881 the railroad promoted Abilene as the "Future Great City of West Texas." J. Stoddard Johnston and other railroad officials platted the townsite. Several hundred people arrived in Abilene before the sale of town lots and began to establish businesses and a church. The lots were auctioned on March 15, 1881; in two days buyers purchased more than 300 lots, and Abilene was officially established. On January 2, 1883, the residents voted to incorporate, and in an election held on October 23, 1883, Abilene became the county seat. ..The map was published by Clarke & Courts, on what is believed to be the oldest lithographic printing press in the State of Texas. Clarke and Courts traces its roots to M. Strickland and Company, organized at Galveston by Miles Strickland in 1857. Strickland moved his printing press to Houston, but subsequently returned to Galveston. Robert Clarke became a partner in the firm in 1870. In 1877, George M. Courts purchased Strickland's interest. In 1877, the two printers brought the first lithograph press in the state to Galveston..." Courtesy: Barry Lawrence Ruderman Antique Maps Inc. - 2 FRAMED 18TH C. FADEN MAPS - GREECE
2 FRAMED 18TH C. FADEN MAPS - GREECE & DENMARK**Originally Listed At $200**
Cartographer: William Faden (British, 1749-1836). Engraver: William Palmer (British, 1735-1812). "Graecie Antiquae et Aegaei Maris Tabula" Published by William Faden January 1st 1793. AND "Denmark and Holstein" Published by William Faden January 1st 1798. A beautiful pair of antique maps published by British mapmaker William Faden and engraved by William Palmer. Both maps have been hand colored and are set in attractive matching frames. Size of Denmark & Holstein map: 5" L x 4.3" W (12.7 cm x 10.9 cm) Size of frame: 14.5" L x 11.5" W (36.8 cm x 29.2 cm)
William Faden was a respected mapmaker in London from the late 18th to the early 19th centuries. According to Barry Lawrence Ruderman, "Faden's star rose during the American Revolution, when he produced popular maps and atlases focused on the American colonies and the battles that raged within them. In 1783, just as the war ended, Faden inherited his father's estate, allowing him to fully control his business and expand it; in the same year he gained the title 'Geographer in Ordinary to his Majesty.' / Faden also commanded a large stock of British county maps, which made him attractive as a partner to the Ordnance Survey; he published the first Ordnance map in 1801, a map of Kent. The Admiralty also admired his work and acquired some of his plates which were re-issued as official naval charts. / Faden was renowned for his ingenuity as well as his business acumen. In 1796 he was awarded a gold medal by the Society of Arts. With his brother-in-law, the astronomer and painter John Russell, he created the first extant lunar globe."

- 16TH / 18TH C. EUROPEAN MAPS OF NEW
16TH / 18TH C. EUROPEAN MAPS OF NEW SPAIN (2)**Originally Listed At $300**
Cartographer: Gerard Mercator. "Hispaniae Novae Nova Descriptio" Published by I.E. Cloppenburgh, Amsterdam, 1632. AND Stieler's "Mexico Und Centro-America …" Gotha, 1828. Two fascinating antique maps of New Spain. First, a copper engraved map entitled "Hispaniae Novae Nova Descriptio" (uncolored as published) that shows the southern and western parts of Mexico. This likely came from the Cloppenburgh competitive editions, and most of these maps were engraved by Pieter van den Keere. It is a fine, dark impression. Joining this is a hand-colored map of the Southwest entitled "Mexico Und Centro-America …" that was published soon after Mexico's independence from Spain. Size of "Hispaniae Novae Nova Descriptio": 8.5" L x 10.75" W (21.6 cm x 27.3 cm) Size of "Mexico Und Centro-America": 13.5" L x 17.25" W (34.3 cm x 43.8 cm)
Barry Ruderman eloquently explains the following about "Mexico und Centro-America" map: "The map is perhaps most noteworthy for its attempt to illustrate the early roads in the Southwest and Baja California, at a time when Mexico had only been independent for about 6 years and much of this region had been largely abandoned by the Spanish Missionaries during the prior decades. / Stieler bases his map on Alexander von Humboldt's map of Mexico, with additions. California is dominated by pre-Fremont Cartographic features, including a mythical river extending toward Salt Lake. Lake Teguayo is shown, along with an are marked Freye Indianer. Dozens of notes on Indians throughout California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and Colorado. Excellent details in the Rocky Mountains, based upon Humboldt, Pike and Fremont. / In California, a "Fresch Water" Bay is noted, fed by a speculative river flowing to the northwest. Further east in the Utah area, Lake Teguayo is noted, the mythical lake south of Lake Timpanagos (Salt Lake), with a note that the western coastline of the map is not known. To the east of Lake Teguayo, the Colorado River drainage system is shown, with numerous roads and small Spanish settlements suggested, along with Indian Tribal names. / Texas is named, but the map shortly predates Austin's Colony. Remarkably, Wheat overlooks this map entirely, although he does note the 1834 United States map."
